About Me

Associate Professor Sandeep Prabhu (Sunny) is passionate about providing state of the art, contemporary, evidence-based treatments for the full spectrum of rhythm disorders. He is dedicated to ensuring patients receive the optimal treatment for their rhythm disorders.

He is also dedicated to advancing the field of electrophysiology through research, in particular clinical trials in atrial fibrillation and the role of catheter ablation. He has been nationally and internationally recognised for his research in the field of atrial fibrillation and heart failure. He has a particular interest in complex atrial fibrillation ablation.

Sunny focuses on:
• A patient-centred approach, tailoring treatments to your specific symptoms and goals.
• Engaging patients in their health care, particularly with the use of mobile technology.
• A focus on patient education and communication.
• Availing patients to ablation procedures (where appropriate) and utilising cutting edge technology for cardiac procedures.
• Integration of clinical practice and clinical research, availing patients to involvement in clinical trials and the latest approaches to treatments.

Education & Training

Sunny was one of a handful of undergraduate students to simultaneously graduate from both medicine and law (with honours in both) from Monash University (2005). He completed his internship and junior medical training at the Alfred Hospital.

He trained in Cardiology at the Alfred, Royal Melbourne and Frankston Hospitals and was admitted to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2013.

He sub-specialised in electrophysiology and device implantation at the Alfred and Royal Melbourne Hospitals, in conjunction with a clinical PhD, before completing an overseas fellowship at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London – Europe’s largest electrophysiology centre, focussing on catheter ablation.

Major Publications

CAMERA-MRI Study

Sunny was the co-ordinator and principle author of this landmark Australian randomised clinical trial evaluating the role of catheter ablation in patients with AF and otherwise unexplained heart failure. This study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in 2017, and has since been incorporated into national and international treatment guidelines.

Atrial scarring in patients with atrial fibrillation and heart failure

Improvement in atrial scarring after catheter ablation or atrial fibrillation in heart failure. Long-Term Follow-Up of the CAMERA-MRI Study. This important study for the first time demonstrated that improvement in heart function following catheter ablation can improve scarring in the atria.

Reversal of Heart Scarring in Heart Failure After Cather Ablation

This paper was the first to describe that scarring of the heart that occurs in a weakened heart muscle due to atrial fibrillation, can be reversed after successful catheter ablation.

Alcohol and Atrial Fibrillation

In concert with the Alfred and Baker, Sunny co-authored a landmark Australian clinical trial (led by colleague Dr Alex Voskoboinik) examining the role of alcohol in atrial fibrillation. This study was published in the world’s leading medical publication, the New England Journal of Medicine in 2020.

Currently Enrolling Clinical Trials

CAMERA-MRI II Study (RECRUITMENT COMPLETE)

This randomised clinical trial is a follow on study from CAMERA-MRI is evaluating the role of MRI detected heart scarring upon heart function after catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation in all patients with heart failure. This study is currently being conducted across several sites across Melbourne and the UK.

The WITHDRAW-AF Study (RECRUITMENT COMPLETE)

This randomised clinical trial plans to evaluate the need of ongoing heart failure medical therapy in patients with a fully recovered heart function following treatment of heart failure due to atrial fibrillation. This study will be performed across multiple sites in Melbourne and Internationally.

The SMART-AF Study (TO COMMENCE 2025)

This study looks to evaluate the role of smart device based applications to track risk factor modification in real time in patients with atrial fibrillation and multiple modifiable risk factors such as blood pressure, weight, alcohol intake, smoking, CPAP machine usage and diabetes control.
